Today I returned to Kansas City after having been on the road for the past week. I visited San Antonio, TX (the Alamo doesn't look the way I remembered it from Pee Wee's Big Adventure), New York, NY, and Bangor, MI. It sure is good to be home again.
Despite my short stay in New York (1.5 days, I'd say), I was able to see a handful of sites, including Times Square, Grand Central Station, ground zero of WTC, the outside of Wall Street & the New York Public Library, the Statue of Liberty (from a distance), and an official NY subway rat. There's something about seeing things in real life that really adds to life, y'know?
One place that really stands out was the bar / lobby of W (a hotel) near Times Square. From the street, you enter into a small room that has water flowing from the ceiling and down the walls, with a reflection of the water dancing on the floor. From this room you step into an elevator that has a surprising sound system (a subwoofer in an elevator? wow!) that brings you to the lobby. The interior design of the bar was awesome (I'm a sucker for good design, you know) and the people were, by and large, dressed sharp.
Being sent to Bangor, Maine was a last minute reroute - I was suppose to spend the weekend in NY. I knew I was going to fly out the day prior to leaving for The Pine Tree State, but I only found out *when* I was going to leave *one hour* before the plane was to take off. It was like an action scene in a bad movie, me getting to LaGuardia from my hotel and reaching the gate in time to claim the last seat in the plane. But, when all was said and done, I was in the home town of Stephen King.
I was hoping to get some sight-seeing in... maybe see the Atlantic coast via Bar Harbor or Camden, ME, or do as one pharmacy technician suggested and take a ski lift over the changing foliage. But, nay, work lasted from sunrise to sunset.
